Summary/Abstract: An aim of considerations is an analysis of legal determinants of the development of large commercial facilities in the post-war period in the selected countries of Western Europe. The basis for the study was a review of the legal regulations concerning location of such facilities – both historical and binding today. Results of the analysis enabled identification of the main trends in the field of changes of the policy of public authorities towards large-format trade. After the period of apparent liberalisation over the recent few dozen years, there can be seen a clear trend to tighten this policy manifesting itself, inter alia, in reduction of the size thresholds defining large commercial facilities, subjection to additional regulations and constraints in terms of locality. At the same time, the previous experience of the West European countries shows that efficient policy towards large-format trade must be put into a wider, efficiently functioning system of land use planning. The article contains a review of literature.
