Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with characteristic features of three most commonly used types of methods of the graduation of life tables: mechanical methods, analytical methods and spline methods. The aims of this paper include discussing their advantages and disadvantages and presenting conclusions concerning their actuarial applications. In the comparison of these methods, we take into consideration the following factors: smoothness, goodness of fit, usefulness for interpolation and extrapolation as well as possibilities of modeling global and local tendencies. The properties of these methods are illustrated with demographic data. The data are used to construct ungraduated life tables, and next, annual death probabilities are graduated.
