Summary/Abstract: Periodicals present an extremely important scientific groundwork for all researchers. A large part of printed journals as sources of high-quality studies are still unavailable for usage. The nature of these kind of materials greatly slows down and complicates its optimum usage (often damage, problems connected to spatial and temporal constraints, etc.). Therefore, the need for better and improved availability of printed periodicals (which is one of the main reasons and often defined goals for digitization) is understandable and necessary. This paper tries to present the most effective method when selecting printed periodical that have the priority in process of digitalization. It attempts to offer a certain decision-making scheme when considering the right approach to digitalization of periodicals. Relying on the scheme presented by the author Hrvoje Stančić in the book Digitizing, and the 3 precise steps offered in the scheme, the paper examines whether it is possible and to what extent to use the presented model in handling the periodicals. The focus of the work will be on the second step, which refers to the assessment process. The paper describes how this research was conducted/applied in the Library of the Catholic Theological Faculty in Sarajevo. Therefore it presents research of periodical assessment in the Library of the Catholic Theological Faculty in Sarajevo. As it requires multiple analyses and special attention, this step can be described as challenging and demanding. This paper attempts to point out the complexity and importance of the initial steps of selection of periodical printed materials. The method used in this research is a combination of two qualitative methods: case studies and content analysis. Research was carried out during the academic year.
