Summary/Abstract: A museums, libraries and archives are established, as cultural institutions, in order to collect, preserve and present cultural and other heritage property and achievements of a region, in various phases of socio-economic development. Fundamental functions of cultural institutions usually include: collecting, documentation, conservation, research, display, interpretation and education. Collecting is the first and probably the most important function for museums. It is also necessary, in creating collection to pay attention to: size of the object, authenticity check, ownership documents, social significance, value of object and representative character of object. By introducing preventive conservation as primary activity of cultural institutions, it is possible to preserve the objects and keep them unchanged for many years. The aim of preventive conservation is preservation of cultural heritage for future generations, and this basic function results with constant care for museum, library and archive objects. Exposure of collected goods to the public and audience set a new task to cultural institutions: an active communication with the visitors, information and the participation in the educational processes. Museums, libraries and archives have become virtual institutions, and they use new technologies to disseminate messages, programs and services beyond their walls. The aim of this paper is to highlight the ways in which cultural institutions collect cultural properties, take care of their protection and their presentation to the public.
