Public Library Velenje Local History Digital Collection

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of my paper is to present the context in which Public Library Velenje local history digital collection was formed. It comprises around 11 thousand digital files. Reasons for the prevalence of new digital material will be given. The concept, structure and the process of forming the collection will be presented. Its special line is that it includes all kinds of nonliterary and literary materials including small prints, grey literature, posters, virtual digital exhibitions etc. Important characteristic is also prevailing part of film, video and music materials which shows the exceptionally vital local music, film and video production. For browser application metadata standard Dublin Core has been used. Browser is divided into user interface for content viewing and administrative interface for adding the information. First version of local history digital collection was presented to the public six years ago. Promotion was carried out with the use of local media and our internal information channels. New collection with web browser has not been finished yet as we are still adding metadata and therefore it has not been presented to the public so far. We expect to finish it by the end of this year. For this reason we intend to start preparations for collection presentation and promotion with the next project. Digital collection meant as an area material will be supplemented by texts kujunproducing which include basic knowledge from the majority of areas from our local surroundings. Šaleški Biographical Lexicon and Music Lexicon have already been published. We plan to prepare other special lexicons from local economy area, culture and technical heritage, geography as well as from plant and animal areas.
