Summary/Abstract: Teaching collection development is currently being challenged by the constant need to introduce changes in the syllabi due to many developments in the field of digital librarianship and information sciences. A need is recognized to reinterpret the existing knowledge and introduce new knowledge and skills. One of the main issues that need to be addressed when planning collection development syllabus is related to the comprehension and transfer of fundamental knowledge and its correlation with practice. Digital collections have become an integral part of cultural heritage institutions and therefore the syllabi needs to address this phenomena, and in particular it’s processing, organization, preservation and usage. This knowledge and skills have become an integral part of collection management. Teaching collection development in libraries brings ever more demanding tasks for instructors as they keep searching for answers related to efficient and effective organization of digital collections. At the same time, it is very important to mark digital materials and collections with new standards and tools, to use the library catalogue as a marketing tool in the promotion of the collection and to organize subject headings in the most adequate manner to secure maximum usage of library collection. Based on the content analysis of syllabi of courses taught in the Department of Information Sciences at the University of Zadar, the author will discuss the challenges facing the education of future information professionals in the field of collection development and management.
