Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses the advantages and possibilities of integrating a variety of literary texts in modern postmethod foreign language instruction, in order to promote linguistic, cultural and personal competences of learners. It begins with an overview of current knowledge from the field of foreign language teaching methodology, and an examination of the place and role of literature in the context of different methods of foreign language teaching, starting from grammar-translation method to the communicative approach to the contemporary eclecticism or postmethod era. This is followed by a critical observation of the reasons for and against, as well as the possibilities of using literary texts in modern language teaching in the ways that successfully combine foreign and native language with literature and culture, respecting individual differences of learners within a class. The analysis was performed in order to obtain better insight into the justifiability and effectiveness of using literature in foreign language teaching in modern times, in different contexts in which a foreign language is learnt, with students at different levels of language proficiency and from different age groups.
