Summary/Abstract: A large proportion of claims paid by the sector of car insurance are connected with losses caused by road accidents. One of the major reasons which accounts for car crashes is speeding, or more precisely, inadequate car speed to the current road conditions. The paper focuses on negative consequences of high speed on Polish roads. On the basis of the popular in Europe model describing the correlation between the actual cars’ speed and the number of injured or killed people in accidents, the authors present the simulations of improvements in road safety, if the speed limits were not broken by drivers. They point out that the real costs of common driving above speed limits are higher than those which are paid by insurance companies.
