Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the national priorities of the cultural policy pursued in Bulgaria as well as the activities of the cultural institutions in terms of problematics commented in artworks by Bulgarian artists after 1989. The article broaches also certain aspects of the national cultural identity deemed in this instance to be a construct of Bulgaria’s governmental cultural policy of earlier historical periods but cyclically reproduced until the early 1990s. The paper seeks to trace in parallel the publicly pursued cultural policy of this country and the artists’ expectations for and mindsets towards the respective cultural institutions and their policies. The article takes into account mostly artists’ responses, expressed by means of various devices at the contemporary art’s disposal, including art interventions, actions and installations.
