Summary/Abstract: This paper seeks to stir up a dispute about the term ‘imitation’ in architecture. It draws a distinction between the simple act of imitation in designing and ‘imitation’ as an architectural approach to the work on existing buildings. The text seeks to revise the meaning of imitation through studying recent realisations and ignoring one-sided historical preconceptions. That allows this method of architectural intervention to be treated without being influenced by other similar terms. Imitation here is confined strictly to the narrow context of the work on exiting buildings, where imitation is a possible approach to architectural intervention. The method of imitation is completely different from imitation in designing new buildings, as the former is a pre-planned semblance while the latter is automatic replicating. From this vantage point, ‘imitation’ is a creative approach in its own right in architectural practice and a significant subject of research.
