Education of the City Jaworzno During the Period of Interwar (1918–1939)

Summary/Abstract: The education of children and young people has always been an important and indispensable social aspect in each historical period. School education throughout history has been changing, the standards of education and quality of teaching determined the economic, social and cultural progress of countries and nations. The article presents the history of school education in Jaworzno in the years 1918–1939. The history of the schools in Jaworzno is known very little, most of the documents which provide relevant information are the school chronicles and preserved materials relating to the activity of particular schools, e.g. financial settlements, the activity of day-care rooms for children, etc. The person who successfully gathered and chronologically compiled the history of education in Jaworzno is Maria Leś Runicka. It is owing to her publications, among other things, that the article could be written. Chronologically, the work covers the interwar period of the city of Jaworzno. The interwar period was almost completely based on archival materials from the local schools. The condition of the educational system in Jaworzno and its general and material situation was found in materials printed today by the educational authorities. Concerning the substance, the article deals with the history of education in respect of organizational forms in the teaching process and realization of compulsory education. The main aspect concerns the presentation of problems related to the school organizational and material activity, considering also the teaching staff and students.
