Summary/Abstract: The role of universities and colleges, which represent a part of European higher education and research space, is to develop harmonic individualities, their knowledge, wisdom, the good and creativity and to contribute to the development of erudition, science, culture and health for the well-being of the whole society. The accomplishment of this task is the subject of main activities at universities during which time modern Slovak schools of higher education have undergone large transformation changes. While in the second decade of the 20th century there was only one university in Slovakia, during the last nine decades dozens of them came into existence. They differentiate according to their founders, number of students, character and content focus, way of organising teaching, material and technical equipment, research activities or international cooperation. Higher education is focused on highly specialized preparation of intelligentsia. It develops self-knowledge and leads to the liberation of man.
