Summary/Abstract: The article provides an interpretation of the essay by Józef Wittlin entitled Chartres as inspired and being polemical towards a poem by R. M. Rilke entitled Archaic Torso of Apollo. Stresing of that hidden dialogic relationship allows for a slightly different take at Wittlin's aesthetics and ethical expectations towards the work of art in the light of Rilke's concept, as well as for pointing to its crucial difference. The context for this interpretation is also provided by the assumptions of 20th century hermeneutics with whose postulates Wittlin's theory of art seems very much resemblant.
