Summary/Abstract: The author of this paper deals with the education of German, Ukrainian and Ruthenian ethnic minorities in Slovakia. He analyses the German, Ukrainian and Ruthenian schools as part of Slovak-school-system-and-pedagogy history. After the World War II the Carpathian Germans could not apply their ethnic laws. After the change of regime in 1989, the German ethnic group tries to build up effective school network in the original settlements where the German language would be taught not only as a foreign language but it would be the language of instruction in majority of school subjects as well. After the year 1945 there was an intensive development of Ukrainian and Ruthenian schools in the eastern part of Slovakia. And the new legislative norms were established as well. Current decline in the number of Ukrainian schools and pupils has been influenced by the parents who do not want their children to be educated in the Ukrainian language. In the 90s of the 20th century after the codification of the Ruthenian language took place, the programe of the Ruthenian movement calls for the revival of Ruthenian schools in the north-east Slovakia. Its development is being influenced by progressive assimilation of young and midle generation. The Slovak Republic implements valid international documents in its approach to the ethnic-minorities’ problems.
