Summary/Abstract: The presented material was assumed to give a closer view of a form of therapy that is becoming more and more popular in Polish psychology, which is art therapy. By combining art and therapy it is possible to experience emotions that have often been blocked, to explore different styles of communication, as well as break internal barriers. Diversity of art therapeutic techniques, using all kinds of available sensory modalities creates an opportunity to increase self-awareness initiate one’s own creative activity. Art therapy is used, as a kind of aid, in working with people of any age regardless of sex, or social background, who suffer not only from mental diseases (e.g. schizophrenia, depression), or somatic diseases (e.g. tumours), but also with healthy people. It can be applied in the form of individual or group therapy carried out in hospitals, clinics, schools, and private treatment centres. Therapy with art can be expressed by music (music therapy), reading (bibliotherapy), dancing (dance therapy), visual arts (art therapy), and many others. The most important therapeutic factor is the creative activity, therapeutic relationship between a participant in a therapy and his or her work, whereas its major goal is a positive, permanent change in self-perception, in perception of current interpersonal contacts, as well as in improvement of generally understood quality of life.
