Summary/Abstract: In a knowledge-based economy, the academic character of a city is its asset, which is skillfully exploited to shape its image and its potential for development. Whereas the fact that the city is operating in higher education is increasingly appreciated by the city authorities and entrepreneurs when making decisions on mutual cooperation, the question is raised about the attitudes and opinions of the residents towards the academic character of the city and the perceived benefits, especially in terms of quality of life. Their presentation, based on the original research, is the purpose of this publication. In general, most of the surveyed residents of academic cities in Poland positively perceive the functioning of higher education institutions in their city of residence, mainly in terms of urban development and its image, to a lesser degree in terms of quality of life. However, the knowledge of respondents on the socio-economic and cultural impact of higher education on urban development and the quality of life of the inhabitants and concrete examples of this impact is very limited. This is partly due to their lack of interest in these problems, but also due to insufficient informational and promotional activities carried out by higher education in cooperation with the authorities and business. This article is of a research nature.
