Summary/Abstract: The present paper concerns the question of the educational activity of the Upper Silesian Catholic clergy in the 19th century. Th e first part is devoted to Polish printing houses and their publishing activity as well as to the editing of Polish newspapers and magazines. The development of Polish reading-rooms and libraries was discussed later. In the subsequent parts of the article the author took up the subject of defending the Polish language in school and the concern for the development of education in Upper Silesia. Another point that was raised is the meaning of religious and national pilgrimages and of parish missions. The paper aims at making a wider public familiar with the hardships and work done by the Silesian clergy for the goal of fostering Polish education in Upper Silesia in the 19th century.
