Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of my contribution, I would like to state that we perceive the Slovak Republic’s security as a basic national interest. We are also aware of the fact that the understanding of security has changed significantly during recent years. A rather simple concept of security was applied during the time of the Cold War. This mainly consisted of counting the numbers of tanks, rockets and troops on both sides. However, security today is much more complicated. It includes, for instance, aspects of internal stability, economic development, demographic trends and other types of intrastate or external threats.
