Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to decide whether sports reports are more about news or commentary. Based on an analysis of press material, the author examines various characteristics of the genre and tries to determine their compatibility with the news canon. As the analysis shows, contemporary sports reports are less about news and more about commentary, interpretation or evaluation. Journalists tend to sum up the contest and briefly describe the course of events. This makes sports reports similar to press comment and review.
