Summary/Abstract: Numerous Derveesh orders played a significant role in spreading the teachings of Islam throughout the world. Tasawwuf and the sufi ethics were taught within sufi institutions called: Hanikah, Ribat or Zawiya (taqqiya). Hanikah is the place wherein Derweeshes reside in isolation from the world with the purpose of dedicating themselves to zikr or for conversations. Ribats are present in the areas with Arabic population and served for the defence of the Muslim territory from foreign attacks. Later on these were turned into the places for the isolation and solitude (halvet), where people who desired isolation in order to fully dedicate themselves to worship. Zawiya is a combination of hanikah and ribat, a modest construction founded by a shaikh straight after the military conquest of some territory and it represented a link with the local population and the foundation of the urban community.
