Summary/Abstract: France has been a great European power seriously involved in the life of Romanian society, motivated by international treaties and economic and political interests. Consequently, the reports of its officials and diplomatic agents, accredited in the principal cities, such as Bucharest, Yassy and Galatz, have been carefully drafted. They understood, among the most diverse aspects, the health situation of this south-eastern European region. The Romanian ports of the Danube were important channels for trade with the West. Romanian products, mainly cereals and animals were much in demand. On the other hand, in the south-eastern European zone, serious diseases were still ravaging among men and animals. The French reports sent from Bucharest, Yassy or Galatz during the period 1864-1880 brought unpublished data on some major epidemics: those of cholera in the years 1865-1866 and 1872-1873. In the same way, they reveal the scientific interest in the symptoms and the cures of another serious, yet inexplicable disease that also ravaged the human and animal race: rabies
