Summary/Abstract: In the 19 th century, when Romanian high society gradually gave up oriental-style clothing as it was worn during the Phanariote regimes (from 1711 in Moldavia and 1714 in Wallachia, to 1 82 1 ) there were two trends in fashions: French fashion for women and English for men. By 1 830, there were still manyelements left from the old style sartorial repertoire: ladies' gowns with puffed sleeves, imported straight from Paris and Vienna, were accessorized with fabulous jewelery, while turbans and cashmere shawls were still worn. These shawls were valuable heirlooms left from one generation to another, from mothers to daughters. From 1860 on wards they were replaced by shawls of fine lace.
