Summary/Abstract: Switzerland is a typical federal state. Its territory is divided into 3.000 municipalities and 26 cantons. Every Swiss has triple citizenship, first of all, of his municipality, then canton and finally Switzerland. Linguistic diversity is also a very important element of Switzerland`s specificity. National languages are German, French, Italian and Romansh. In comparison with other European democracies Switzerland stands out as a country where direct democracy plays a very large role. The state structure is based on three levels, with particular emphasis on the community. Swiss municipality is the foundations of the state. The municipal self-government was constitutionally guaranteed.
