HALF CENTURY OF ARCHIVE SERVICES OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Summary/Abstract: The archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina had their 50th anniversary last year. During the period the impressive results were achieved: about 3000 funds consisting of 24.000 linear meters of the archival materials collected in the field are presently kept in the Archives of BiH as the central archival institutions and eight more regional archives. A considerable number of records are still in a possession of their holders due to the bad conditions for keeping and use in the archives (space, equipment etc.). The war caused by the aggression against BiH affected the archival activities greatly. Numerous archival records were destroyed, especially those in the record offices in the phase of producing. According to some researches about half of the total production of the archival materials was destroyed. The war brought about other problems as well. Many archival professionals have gone or got killed, archival equipment and technique were damaged or destroyed. In the post­war period there are activities going on to regulate the archival branch of activities in a systemic way (to become administrative organ) completing the archival network (the Archives of Federation of B­ H and the Archives of Republika Srpska). In addition, the protection is­ sue should be regulated by anew law and new professionals are expected to be educated. To achieve all this requires the organised efforts of the BiH authorities/administration because enthusiasm of the archival people has its limits.
