Summary/Abstract: The article deals with means of expressing negative constructions in the third part of Hand- vnd Hauβbuch (1638) by Heinrich Stahl. Because the negative constructions in Estonian and German are remarkably different, one might assume that the German authors of the 17th century encountered many problems when translating them. Translation diffi culties could explain why the Estonian language texts of this period reveal numerous negative constructions that are unnatural from the perspective of Estonian.
