February 11 - May 10, 1866 - A Historical Parallel

Summary/Abstract: The article aims at an overview of two important moments in the modern history of the Romanians: the forced abdication of the prince Alexander I and the arrival of Prince Carol I in the German dynasty by Hohenzollern Sigmaringen respectively. In the author's view, viewed by a common measure unit, the two episodes are, in essence, complementary and of close historical significance. In the first part of the essay they are synthesized in a coherent formulation of historical development, the reasons behind Cuza's fall: total damage to public image and personal popularity, ending his role in modernizing Romanian society, losing political credibility internationally.
