Summary/Abstract: The article is based on the analysis of archival materials that highlight Aivazovsky`s contribution to the development and improvement of Theodosia in the second half of the XIXth century. The main reasons which promoted the active cultural and social activities of Aivazovsky in Theodosia are considered. It is important that, although he was not rich from the beginning, after having achieved success and popularity Aivazovsky did not forget about Theodosia`s future. He often quite successfully represented the citizens` interests at Court. Aivazovsky`s energy was aimed at improving the city: he advocated the revival of its trade and economic significance, engaged in charity, gave the city another water source from the Subash (the river being on his country estate) and initiated construction of the Theodosia-Dzhankoy railway line. No less of a significant task for him was studying Theodosia`s history. He participated in large-scale archaeological excavations, dealt with the protection of Crimean monuments and took part in the study of more than 90 mounds. By 1881 Aivazovsky had become an honorary citizen of the city. Summing up it is clearly that he really loved Theodosia and he aimed this love at improving the city and the lives of its citizens.
