The changes of social demand for the extreme right in Hungary

Summary/Abstract: Political Capital Institute developed its Demand for Right Wing Extremism Index (DEREX) in 2010. The index – expressed as a percentage – indicates the ratio of respondents who are psychologically receptive (based on their attitudes and values) to authoritarian, ultranationalist, antiestablishment ideologies, and to political behavior that can be derived from these attitudes. Using this index, a comparison can be made between various European countries as to their share of attitude-extremism. Based on the European Social Survey, DEREX successfully predicted the increase in the number of extreme-right leaning voters in several European countries. At the same time, the index also pointed to regional variations in patterns of support for the extreme-right, from which varying levels of social and political risks derive. Our study describes how the ratio of attitude-extremists varied across the full range of data gathered by ESS, and the sort of similarities and differences that can be identified between European societies. We also point to the connection between supply and demand, and dedicate special attention to the Hungarian results.
