Summary/Abstract: The events between 1866 and 1914 that Romania went through cannot be understood outside the role played by King Carol I in conquering the independence of Romania, in raising the prestige of the country which became a kingdom in 1881 and in founding the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen dynasty that included king Ferdinand I, Carol II and Mihai I.
