Summary/Abstract: The present paper is devoted to the characteristics of specific means of expressivity employed in the headlines of Russian, Czech and English tabloids. Treatment of publicist style is based on the thesis of co-occurence of two contrastive functions (information, persuasion) subject to influence of the general social and political situation (e.g. the differentiation between quality and tabloid press in contemporary Russia). In Czech, intimization of spoken colloquial discourse is observed. In Russian and English, inconventional treatment of language is highlighted (wordformation, allusions). Thus, fatic function appears to prevail in Czech tabloids (direct persuasion) whereas poetic function is typical of Russian and English tabloids (indirect, multilevel persuasion).
