Summary/Abstract: This article provides a close commentary on Andrzej Sapija’s film: ‘The Return of Odysseus’ by Tadeusz Kantor: Notes from Rehearsals, a documentary comprised of an intriguing palimpsest of voiceover, film, and photographic materials covering diverse aspects of the director’s practice, which Kantor himself considered to be the best film made about his work. This essay attends to the intricate interweaving of the numerous ‘poor fragments’ from Kantor’s life and art that appear throughout, aiming to open up perspectives that will be unfamiliar to many viewers (especially those unfamiliar with Polish-language sources) and to examine the dialectical relationship that Sapija establishes with the process of creating I Shall Never Return (1988) – which, at the time, Kantor considered would likely be his final production.
