Summary/Abstract: This essay seeks to examine the work of the Polish theatre director Krzysztof Warlikowski from the perspective of psychoanalytic theory, specifically through the writings of Freud on neurosis and trauma. Warlikowski's theatre is considered as a therapeutic form of cultural praxis, and is situated within the social and political context of Poland's troubled transition from communism, and the transformations in Polish cultural practice after 1989. The author focuses on Warlikowski's production of Hamlet (1999) at TR Warszawa, outlining its significance for the director's ongoing investigations.
