Summary/Abstract: The decision to enlarge NATO, as part of the transformation process initiated in the last decade of the 20th century, was taken simultaneously with the aspirations expressed by the former communist states to be sheltered by NATO's security umbrella. The leaders of Central and Eastern European countries started seeking NATO membership in order to be part of a post-Cold War security environment characterized by stability and diminished threats to peace. In these circumstances, the admission of new members can be considered a two-way process:on the one hand, there is NATO's willingness to accept new members in order to update itsrole and area of action and on the other hand, we can identify the goal of potential members tobe covered by NATO security guarantees.
