THE SHARE OF THE INSURANCE ACTIVITY IN THE FORMATION OF THE GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT OF BULGARIA

Summary/Abstract: The gross premium income of insurance companies forms part of the gross domestic product. The review of the insurance market in Bulgaria shows the dominant role of General insurance as its share significantly exceeds the share of Life insurance. The European insurance market is characterized by the leading importance of Life insurance compared to General insurance. A positive trend in the development of the insurance market is the overtaking dynamics of gross premium income compared to gross domestic product. During the analysed period the indicators “insurance penetration” and “insurance density” marked a continuous growth and demonstrate the significant potential of the insurance sector in Bulgaria and its importance to our economy. Despite these trends, the insurance industry in our country significantly lags behind the levels typical for most European countries.
