Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the modification of object — word attitude in Russian literature on the boundary of XIX–XX centuries. The material under investigation is formed by the epic narrations where objects with the archetypical meaning (a door, a window, a chair) may represent the passage from life to death. Semantic changes of object’ are especially noticeable if they are accompanied by the idea of reincarnation that organize forms the area between life and death. The short story by Aleksey Apukhtin Mezhdu Smertiu i Zhizniu (Between Death and Life) is analyzed as paradigmatical text the reminiscences from which may be found in L. Tolstoy’s Smert’ of Ivan Ilich (The Death of Ivan Ilich), B. Pasternak’s Doktor Zhivago or in V. Nabokov’s Rozhdestvo (Christmas).
