Summary/Abstract: The process of fierce tabloidisation is a marking of the global media market at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, present not only in the printed, but also in electronic media and on-line publications. Terms ’tabloid’ and ’tabloid journalism’ have become a part of everyday laymen’s dictionary, involving the inevitable comparison with quality, respectable journalism dominated by the explorative journalists’ approach, seen as an antipode to tabloidisation. However, an insight into media production demonstrates that in nowadays it is exceptionally hard to talk about ideal types of these two dominating models of journalism. The third millennium seems to have become the age of media hybrids’ rule (infotainment). The definition of the term ’tabloid’ understands the recognition of the tabloid journalism’s dual nature, which, during the dramatic, crisis situations (wars, stock market crashes, terrorist attacks) mimics the so called serious journalism. Vice versa, in the periods of the decreased circulation and increasingly competitive market game, the quality print allows itself frequent, tabloid-like excesses.
