Summary/Abstract: Experiment, understood as a radical innovation that breaks existing conventions is present in art asl ong as art exists, and the many examples of it may be traced back to antiquity. The contemporary form of experiment, referring to the paradigm of a scientific method, used for searching the better solutions to problems is associated with the concept of avantgarde that has raised it to the necessary duty of creator. In architecture, there is a strong trend to search for innovations that often become common practice, due to recognized realizations. The most dominant trends nowadays include projects that draw from ecological, social concepts, new technologies and even directly from philosophy, focused on aesthetics. By referring a series of own studies, author points to a distinctive feature of this type of projects that conceptualizes the general ideas that are reflected inspecific situations. Real design tasks are what the search and development of the ideas is basedon. These can, but not necessarily must find their practical use in other projects. The commonfeature of the presented works is their openness, disinterestedness, limited functionality, or evena sort of “uselessness”, with a slightly utopian character.
