Summary/Abstract: Te study constitutes the beginning of discussion on the role of official archives as a source of genealogical studies. It includes an information about a series of envelopes containing identity cards and registration records in law in 1931-1975. Te object of the study is documents gathered in the Krakow City Hall’s archive. Te study consists of two major parts. Te former concerns the envelopes containing identity cards of the deceased.Te latter raises the issue of documents concerning citizen’s migration control such as registration records and residents’ register cards. Te study also contains the legal, historical and social perspective description of the process of fling to public use the inventory records and their role over the years. Te study raises the issue of manner of making these documents available for genealogical purposes as well as their state of preservation and factors that have influenced it. It demonstrates beyond doubt the importance of information retained in the discussed documents in the process of raising genealogical queries for ancestors living in the 20th century.
