Macro ethical analysis is using the Bourdieu’s field theory, and journalistic field in specific, to illustrates some of the interdependencies of the social institutions in which journalism operate. In this framework, the paper analysis the arguments of Laurel Leff in her book «Buried by the Times» in which it is claimed that the New York Times failed in covering the story of Holocaust. In macro ethical framework the values of journalistic professionalism and independence are being defined and they serve as a basis to reevaluate the Times’ choice not to give a prominent place to the Holocaust story. It is concluded in the paper that, faced with an ethical dilemma, the editors of the Times selected journalistic independence over professionalism.
