Summary/Abstract: A large part of our communicative activity consists of making statements which include some kind of evaluation, rather than purely descriptive statements. Speakers use linguistic means to express evaluation when they need to transmit what they think about objects and events surrounding them. The present article starts from the hypothesis that expressiveness, emotion and emotional valuation can be defi ned in a systematic way. Subsequently, the authors identify the characteristics of emotional vocabulary which should be taken into account both in lexicographical description and for possible application in automatic translation. The article thus establishes the bases for undertaking a contrastive analysis of evaluative vocabulary in general, and further proposes a contrastive analysis of lexical items in Russian and Spanish which reflect a negative or positive evaluation of objects and events.
