Summary/Abstract: On seeing the title given to this superb exhibition at the Budapest History Museum and its English- language catalogue, one stumbles straight away into a strange contradiction. Those well-versed in European history may be aware that Queen Mary of Hungary was Regent of the Low Countries from 1531 to 1555, but they will not necessarily be aware quite why and how the attribute “of Hungary” became attached to her name.
