Summary/Abstract: The paper will address three aspects. On the one hand, the experience of cross-border cooperation (CBC) instrument in the EU enlargement policy will be reviewed. The inclusion of this instrument in the Association Agreements of the Central and Eastern European countries to the EU demonstrated that the EU was moving towards a level where frontiers, separating the EU Member States and those in the process of accession, had to become from future factors of separation to development factors for once peripheral regions. Secondly, starting from the experience of using the CBC instrument in the enlargement process, we will go through the steps of using it in relation to the neighbouring states at the EU borders, insisting on the Eastern border. Finally, we will look at the results of using the CBC tool in the relationship with Moldova and Ukraine
