Summary/Abstract: The perspective presented here for future research on journalism and media management is rational choice theory. So far, it has rarely been applied to media research. Economists as well as communication researchers have neglected the economics of journalism. This paper sketches out the assumptions on which an economic theory of journalism is based, the kind of insights it promises, and how it can be applied in research. Conclusions deal with the infrastructures of journalism which are needed to provide and improve quality in journalism– and why neither the market nor the government nor philanthropic institutions are likely to provide them sufficiently.
