Summary/Abstract: This article concerns psychological analysis of the leading female character in Dostoyevsk’s The Idiot based on selected theories of neuroses. The study refers to, inter alia, Karen Horne’s concept of neurotic pride; Antoni Kępińsk’s pathology of neuroses; and neuroses on the basis of dynamic psychology (psychoanalysis). Additionally the article discusses the social and cultural context of mental illness theme in the work of the author of Crime and Punishment, and the degree of its adequacy in relation to the actual mental disorders. The central theme of the paper is neurotic confl icts, which are presented as a signifi cant component of the world. It was assumed that these confl icts are the main driving force behind the novel, as they place the heroine in the center of narrative structure. This paper’s approach to the subject is meant to highlight the elements of the novel that contribute.
