Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the stylistic peculiarities of traditional essay texts in relation to writing modes. The structural basis of this genre is reasoning, which links the essay with the scientific style. However, essay reasoning differs from reasoning of the scientific style, which is based on deduction and induction. The scientific style is influenced by analogy, which is distinguished by the science of logic as a kind of traductive reasoning. The structural model of this type of reasoning is preserved in tropes, i.e. simile and metaphor. The informative function is their primary function in traditional essay texts, whereas other functions, i.e. expressive and aesthetic, are secondary. Namely this functional hierarchy determines the stylistic peculiarities of essay reasoning. These peculiarities distinguish essay reasoning from scientific reasoning.
