Summary/Abstract: The description of world pictures is one of the most important tasks of the humanities, including literary science. Space is one of the dominant categories of the world picture. The spatial co-ordinate axes – both the vertical and horizontal – determine the fundamental features of the world perception, the way of life and the manner of feeling of the individual, as well as humankind. The horizontal axis constructs a network of topoi that marks the boundaries of consciousness, forming the spatial model of the spiritual continuum. The major topoi are as follows: house, city – village, East – West, North – South, homeland – foreign land, capital – province, etc.
