Summary/Abstract: The story of establishing the Bulgarian and Croatian musical theatres in the early twentieth century is traced out against a backdrop of the cultural elites’ striving to absorb components of various civilizational structures, an integral part on the road towards the full emancipation of cultural life and linking up art traditions at the Balkan crossroads with the European reflective and aesthetic context. An attempt is made to depict the path of Bulgarian and Croatian operas toward modernity, concomitant with the natural desire to fit into the tradition of the European spiritual values, elated by the enlightening credo of the pioneers and the will to ‘reshape’ the individual. An emphasis is put on the interpretation of the ‘native’ not as uniqueness of the origin, but rather as a configuration of a kind of ‘borrowing’, where the ‘native’ is not only identified through reflecting it in the foreign, but is also created through its assimilation.
