New Time Bulgarians: An Overview of the Origins of Bulgaria’s New Musical Culture

Summary/Abstract: The seventieth anniversary since the publishing of the book History of Music (1946) by Stoian Brashovanov (1888–1956) is a good reason to trace the evolution of the comprehension of the terms New Time and New Music in Bulgaria. On the basis of Bulgarian musicology’s experience of several decades, we now have a relatively clear idea of what the conditional terms ‘Old Bulgarian music’ and ‘New Bulgarian music’ are supposed to mean. The paper focuses on the contemporary interpretation of the line between the two musical and historical periods.
