Summary/Abstract: Monocultural education, whose aim is to form a powerful feeling of belonging to the national culture, is therefore no longer suitable for “the spirit of the time” which is shaped by the processes of modernization and liberalization. The logic of these processes has led to the visible internal differences between the cultural identities in the modern societies – there is not a unique cultural identity in them, but diverse, even opposed identities. Can the members of different cultural environments, which represent cul¬tu¬ral dif¬fe¬ren¬ces, expect accept of their own cultural identities within the institutionalized education? It is assumed that the institutionalized education is one of the most important instruments of homogenization and transferring of the cultural contents and meanings to the new generations, however, its role is not to restrict the freedom of the individual to choose the identity, but to enable overcoming of the boundary between the carriers of different identities. Multicultural education, education which is open for cultural diversities and pluralism, can from foreigners make acquaintances, maybe even friends.
