Summary/Abstract: The paper presents a study regarding demonstrative noun phrases in anaphora in Modern Greek in comparison to definite descriptions. After outlining the semantic features of the two determiners, some of the functions of demonstrative noun phrases in discourse are discussed, including identification, modification, focus shift, topic establishment and expressive function. For some of these functions quantitative data are provided from a corpus of Greek newspaper articles.
